"Spring" Break

*Disclaimer: I am not whining or looking for pity regarding my spring break, I realize I made a choice.

The quotations around the "Spring" in my title is obviously because the temperature never topped 45 this week and snow was seen several times descending to the ground. Also because I spent a good portion of time shovelling horse manure. Smokey managed to get his '78 F-100 stuck in the field of manure, possibly because of the racing slicks he insists on having on the back of this magnificent machine. Well, as his tires are spinnng everywhere I come to the horrific realization that the substance being rooster-tailed from his back tires is not mud, but primarily shit. In addition, I had been standing in range of this spray, which cause another painful realization aboutt he material now covering me. In addition, it was about 28 degrees with 20 MPH winds. Not that I'm bitter or complaining about this. Alright fine, I obviously am. However, it was as always a learning experience and I managed to get some sweet dollars out of the deal, so its all good in the end. As a side note, my cousin was kicked by a horse this week and I had to be the first response due to everyone else's abscence and my grandfather's crankiness. That was entertaining, that is once I knew she was not seriously injured, to witness the circus of family members and their concern when she was obviously fine, but came away with some fat bruises.

At this family gathering of sorts my granfather informed me that another one of my cousin's had been named the captain of the Wal-Mart professional bass fishing team, quite the celebrity position in our neck of the woods. He gets to travel around the country fishing with Wal-Mart as his sponsor going to all those crazy bass tournaments you see on ESPN 2 before 6 am. The pride I felt wa sgreatly diminshed later in the week when it was discovered that he was married, living with, or about to marry another one of my cousins (who for the record is his cousin also, first cousins). Well, this completely burst my bubble on the sweet Wal-Mart fishing apparel I was going to recieve and somewhat killed my desire to sport it around. Other hilarious anecdotes from this week include my granfather's stories of eating Opossum. Apparently his mother would trap them in cages and feed them corn to "clean em out" for a week and the cook them up in stew or something. Well, one day at a lumber mill my grandfather and my namesake, "Nat", managed to kill one of these vile creratures, put it on a shovel, heat it in a boiler, and then eat it.

Tomorrow its a trip to see Sid and hang out in Chapel Hill for the evening which promises to be a barrel of fun because, after all, this is Sid we're talking about. Then I should be up early the next morning to make the final sprint back to school. This will of course be Erin's birthday and cause for celebration when she arrives later that evening from their legitimate spring break vacation. Until then, I will do my best to relax in the last few free days I have and look forward to seeing all my friends as well or better than I left them.
